ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO
Ohio was admitted into the Union as the
seventeenth state. It was the first state
carved out of the old Northwest Territory.
Chillicothe was chosen as the first capitol,
the capitol building being made of freestone
from the neighboring hills. Chillicothe was
the capitol until 1808, when, because of the
legislature's desire for a more centralized
location, Zanesville was temporarily chosen.
In the year 1817 a permanent location was
established in what is now the city of Co-
lumbus, where the present capitol was com-
pleted in 1861.
Although, now, it is wholly inadequate to
present day needs, it stands as a monument
to those who had the foresight to see to it
that Ohio would become a leader of states.
Therefore, the class of 1953 has chosen, as
the theme for the 1953 Flame, the "Ohio
Sesquicentennial."

The three R's - 'Readin' 'Ritin', and 'Rithmetic . . . were developed for American
school children by Ohioans.
William Holmes McGuffey's reader: Platt Rogers Spencer's Spencerian Pen-

These early Ohio educators would truly be
proud of the progress that has been made in
Big Walnut School District in the providing
of the best books and facilities and in fact
that the people in the district are interested
enough in education to provide the beauti-

Ohio is called the "Mother of Presidents" having contributed seven Presidents
of the United States.
The Seniors, under their advisors, Mr. Miller and Mrs. Smart,
have been an active group this year. Soon after school started,
the annual staff was elected and work was begun on the year-
book. A booth was set up at the Halloween Frolic in which
baked goods and candy were sold. Other money-making ac-
tivities included scrap drives and a bake sale. On April 30. the
class play, "Annie Get Your Gun," directed by Mrs. Peregrine,
was successfully staged in the Big Walnut High School Gym.
Baccalaureate on May 17, and Commencement exercises on May
21, closed the activities for the "Class of 1953."

SPANISH CLASSES
The Spanish classes under the supervision of their teacher, Mrs. Peregrine, have had a
pleasant year. They enjoyed a Spanish breakfast, a Christmas party with Principal Souders,
Superintendent Miller and the secretary, Mrs. Miller, as guests of honor. They enjoyed the Spanish
custom of breaking the Pinata bag where each received a gift. They then attended the fine
performance of Jose Greco, the widely known Spanish dancer at the Hartman Theater.

Y-TEENS
The Y-Teens, consisting of 59 members, have, under the leadership of Mrs. Bernard Searles,
experienced a very busy and successful year.
One of the biggest undertakings of the Y-Teens for 1952-53 was the annual Homecoming.
We had the program at the field along with the selling of shakers, programs, and mums. After
the game, the Y-Teens sponsored the dance at the Sunbury Elementary School.
Some of our other important events were: Get Acquainted Party, Hobo Hike with the F.H.A.,
Recognition Service, Football Party, two joint meetings with the Y.W.C.A., the sale of plastic
towels, bake sale, school chapel, Mother-Daughter Banquet, Easter Egg Roll, and Senior Break-
fast.
Along with all of our good times and money making projects we have sent contributions
to the Heart Fund and the World Fellowship Fund. At Christmas time the girls at the Girls'
Industrial School were very happy with the gifts sent to them by the Big Walnut Y-Teens.
Y-Teen Week was February 14th through the 20th.

FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA
The Big Walnut Future Homemakers of America have carried through their theme for the
year, "Homemaking training today brings happier homes tomorrow." Encouraged by our ad-
viser, Mrs. Jo Ann Smart and our President, Herma Richardson, we completed a successful year.
Among the highlights for the year were, the Hobo Convention, a Bake Sale, a booth at the
Delaware county fair for which we received the grade of A, a Halloween Party, F ormal Initia-
tion for the new members, and a Panel Discussion with the F. F. A. We also enjoyed a skating
party, and the presentation of a program for the Little Walnut Grange.
But no year would be completed without the April activity, the All Sports Dance, which
honored our Queen and King, and in May our Mother-Daughter Banquet which brought the
year to a memorable close.

The music of Ohio ox-
cart days was home-
made, just as the wagons
aad tools and clothing
were. There were fiddlers
for Saturday night dances,
ballad-singers with their
guitars, preachers "lining
out" the hymns on Sun-
day. There was no public,
no professional music.

SPORTS
Our forefathers had the sulky races, horse shoe pitching, hunting and fishing as their enter-
tainment, the plowing of fields, digging in mines, and working in the furnaces gave them the
required exercises, but today our boys and girls work out on the football field, the basketball
court, the baseball diamond, and on the track.

Big Walnut High School Yearbook. 1953: The Flame (p. 78)
Description
Corresponds to page 79 of Big Walnut High School Yearbook. 11953: The Flame.
Ohio was pioneered by the men and women of the original
thirteen American colonies. Here they united in a common effort
and a common purpose.
Moreover, Ohio's agricultural and industrial development
was hastened by the people of many lands. Ohio was the hope
of the burdened and the oppressed, who came seeking peace and
security, and asking only the opportunity to work for them. Here
in Ohio occurred a blending of many tongues and racial customs
and ideals. Each group had made its important contribution.
The state of Ohio today is a testimonial to the combined
efforts of the far-sighted and the enterprising.
