Description

This picture was taken

Aug 28, 1930, when we were

enroute home from a trip to Va.

and M'd. It is east of Berryville

Virginia, In this house, called

Audley, Nellie Custis-Lewis

died. Why she left the splendid

Mansion called "Woodlawn"

close by Mt. Vernon I do not

know. Washington was so

pleased because his beloved

step-granddaughter married his

favorite nephew, Fielding Lewis

he bestowed upon them 2500 acre,

of his big plantation. I

can't help wondering why they left

it and went to Berryville, and this

plain little house. It was said

to be very lovely in the inside.

I believe Nellie moved here

after her husband died.

Berryville is the home of ex Gov.

Harry Byrd-Admiral Byrds

ho. This is one of the greatest fruit

sections in the U.S. I see it every

once in a while- Aug 31 last time.
