SUNBURY SQUARE FUTURE HISTORY
PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

How the project came about:

Several years ago, Floyd Siebert was researching his family history in

Springfield, Illinois. He asked the librarian if they had photos of buildings

where key family members had worked. There were a few "great finds" but

for the most part the results were minimal or non-existent. The thought

crossed his mind that someone should be taking photographs today and

placing them in the library collection so 25 or 50 years from now, when

the younger generation asks the question "What did Sunbury or Galena look

like when... ?' the answer will be "Will these photos help"?


In early spring of 2018, Floyd was in the Community Library in Sunbury

and met Chauncey Montgomery, the Library director. He asked if the library

would be interested in a group of senior volunteer photographers taking

current photographs of the historic buildings around the village square.

Chauncey was favorable and the Community Library Future History Project

was created.


The project created two books

Community Library Future History Project A view of Sunbury Ohio

both past and present.

Community Library Future History Project A view of Galena Ohio

both past and present.


Photographers from the Westerville Senior Center and SourcePoint

photography groups were recruited to make the photographs. An effort was

made to photograph the buildings from the same angles of earlier

photographs to show the changes over the years.

Who helped:

This project could not have moved forward without the help of several key

people. Margaret Arnold graciously provided a meeting room and access to

the Community Library Collection, which houses historical photos of

Sunbury Square going back as far as 1896. Many of the older photos were

preserved on DVD's created by Polly Horn in the mid 50's. Polly's booklet,

"A Walking Tour of Sunbury Square" written in March 2004, contained

priceless information about the businesses that occupied the buildings

throughout the years. Chauncey Montgomery gave us access to the Chamber

of Commerce Directories for further research.

Photo Credits:

The Mid -Ohio [Buckeye] Camera Club is credited for photographing many of the

buildings in 1966 as is Ron Bryant for his photographs in 1966. In the fall of

2018 and the spring of 2019, the Westerville Senior Center and SourcePoint

Photography Groups took to the streets with cameras in hand. Specific

photographers from these groups are credited in the captions of the most

recent photographs.


Although we no longer know the names of the photographers who took the

earliest photos, we are indebted to their skills and foresight in documenting

many of Sunbury's key events. Whenever we were able to document the

source and date of the photos, the information was included. When only the

era of the photo was known, we inserted "photo ca..." and if no information

was available, we simply left the field blank.


PHOTOGRAPHERS Through the Years

Before the 2018 photo shoot began historic images were gathered from

known sources. Since the photographs came from numerous sources and in most

cases did not identify the photographer, we do not have a way to recognize their

work which documents Sunbury and Galena in earlier years.


We recognize and thank the Mid-Ohio [Buckeye] Camera Club who photographed

Sunbury in 1965-1966 and, in many cases, paired their work with earlier images.

THE LEADERSHIP TEAM

Floyd Siebert

Floyd Siebert created the Sunbury Future History Project with the Sunbury

Community Library and maintained relationships with library leadership and staff

throughout the project. Driving the community, he created maps to guide

photographers to neighborhoods of interest. He recruited, trained and coached

photographers to develop and maintain documentary standards for the images.



He restored historic images to bring back detail that was fading caused by

limitations in older photographic processes. Using research in Polly Horn's

booklet, "A Walking Tour into the history of the Sunbury Square", city directories

telephone books and chamber of commerce annual reports, he worked toward

documenting the years each business was in a specific location.

Adele Dunn

Adele Dunn is a skilled organizer and

served as a member of the Leadership Team.

She used her organizational skills to develop

a format for this book. She included

assembly of historic and current

photographs and data on local historic sites.

Her patience guided her through endless

additions and revisions as more of the

Sunbury story unfolded.


She used her photographic skills to

provide modern day images of businesses on

the village square along Vernon Street and

researched their site histories through

owners and staff.



Phyllis Hollifield

Phyllis Hollifield was a valued

member of the Leadership Team. She

created and maintained the database of

historic and modern images to be

presented to the Sunbury Community

Library as Sunbury and Galena's future

history. She has organized and formatted

the final copy of this book.


She actively participated as a

photographer, accepting multiple

assignments. To maintain her high-

standards, she made numerous

trips to Sunbury for reshoots. She

worked to duplicate the angle and

perspective of historic images. Another

strong asset was her personal coaching to

help fellow photographers maintain high

quality standards.

PARTICIPATING PHOTOGRAPHERS

It is with the deepest gratitude that we thank the photographers. The

photographers are all "seniors" from the photography groups at the Westerville

Senior Center and Delaware County's SourcePoint. For the most part they are fine

arts photographers who interpret images as art. In this project they had to maintain

documentary standards without personal interpretation to protect the integrity of

the project. A real challenge, but well done.

ACCURACY

Historical accuracy and a documentary photographic approach have been

foremost in thinking for the project team.


Names of business, locations and dates of operation though the years have

been researched based on documents and photographs available. Names and

names used in the historical information have been found in historic

documents and/or photographs. Comments from verbal memory from

individuals have been left out and await further verification.


When shooting the current photographs, photographers were required to

maintain documentary photojournalistic standards without creative additions

or subtractions. "This is the way it was when I took the photograph."


Historic images have been restored to improve contrast and bring back detail

and brightness obscured by the photographic process through the years.


We assume that as time goes by, we will hear of more information and of

course, some inaccuracies will need to be corrected. But today, this is our

best effort.

Welcome to Sunbury's Village Square. Unlike many small towns, Sunbury

has managed to maintain a village green as a common meeting ground for

community events at the heart of the village. Early settlers found the square

an ideal spot for grazing livestock. After removing the gigantic trees to

prevent wild animals or Indian attacks, the bare land was fenced and all

livestock earmarked so the owners could go about their business without

worrying about the animals.


Sunbury's history begins opposite the southwest corner of the village square

in the year 1816. Two brothers Lawrence Myers, 22 and William Myers,

probably 20, platted the village of Sunbury making the western boundary

Sunset Street, the southern boundary South Street, the eastern boundary

Morning Street, and the northern boundary North Street. The Burying

Ground was placed outside the northwest edge of town so that those dying of

epidemics would not infest the villagers. The center of town was set aside as

the Village Green and designated to be used only for the good of all the

residents and to be divided among the Myers' heirs if it is to be cut up for

private enterprise.


William owned most of the land south of the square and had a tannery just

south of town. Lawrence resided at 45 South Columbus Street, later to be

called the Hopkins House and now the Myers Inn. Hezekiah Rogers ran a

log cabin stagecoach inn three doors south of Sparks's Citgo Station at the

corner of Granville and Columbus Streets. (This log cabin was still within

the walls of the residence on this lot when it burned in 1994). It took

stagecoaches two days to travel from Mt. Vernon to Franklinton (which is

now part of Columbus) making overnight accommodations very profitable.

Site and Building History: 2,4, and 6 S. Vernon St.

1900's
While building was owned by Blakely and Williams, the building housed a
butcher shop, a general store with shoes, clothes, carpet, wallpaper, and
draperies, Curren's Restaurant, Satterfields's Red and White Grocery Store,
and Burrer's Sunbury Electric Shop.


1926
Prior to the 1926 fire, this side of the square was made up of frame business
buildings of many shapes. The fire burned out the drug store in the middle
of the block, but the surrounding businesses suffered so much smoke and
water damage they had to replaced, thus wiping out all of the middle
section of the block from 16-30. The present brick buildings were erected
with a brick firewall dividing the building to prevent another major fire.


1956
A second fire in 1956 took down the frame Blakely-Williams Building but
was stopped by the fire wall.*


1965 or1966
After the 1956 fire, the present brick building is built and has housed:
White's Market, G. & N. Dime Store, Flair Fashion Beauty Shop, Sunbury
Country Store, a deli, a doll shop, Judy McDavid's Frame and Candle Shop,
the Packaging Shop and the Center for Ghost Town Research.

Prior to the 1926 fire, this part of the block was known as the Nathan
Marble Block after the local carpenter who owned it. Businesses occupying
this building included: Gelston's Bakery, Kimball Sedgewick, Cash and
Carry Store and Wilcox 5 and 10.

After 1926
This was the first of the buildings rebuilt after the 1926 fire. Louise Sheets'
Little Shop of Women's Clothes moved in.

Lot was owned by F. Utley. The Kempton Building was built and an eye
doctor sets up shop here.

1944
A Barber Shop occupied the building. Community Library was founded
here by a group of Women from the YMCA. The first library was in the
basement of the building.

1945
Part of the frame Kempton Building was removed and the rest was moved
to the corner of Cherry and Morning Streets to become a 2-family dwelling.
The brick building was built by Don Perfect as a garage.

1947
The brick building was purchased by Sunbury News in 1947. Kenneth Link
opens a garage and trucking business at 42 S. Vernon. Joe Schilder's Law
Office occupied part of the building at 42 S.

Three homes make up this building. Two small frame buildings are towards the back of
the lot. The third is built across from the front, joining the back two. One of the original
houses was built by Lyman S. and Martha (daughter of Lawrence and Eliza Myers)
Cook. Martha died young and her 3 children died as youngsters so there were no Myers
heirs in this family.

1842: Charlie Armstrong purchases land (2 lots) from Eliza Myers. Jakey Burrer,
runs a store built of stone and a tavern. When the stone building was torn
down, the stones were used to build a fireplace in Myers Inn. Early
businesses at this location include: Root Bakery, a store that Wilson ran
next door, a Blacksmith Shop operated by Jim Irwin, and a Filling Station
operated by Dave Rosecrans. At some point, the two lots are combined.

Prior to 1820
Lawrence Myers lives in a one room house.

1820
Myers builds a large frame house deeper than it was wide as a Stagecoach
Inn, better than Roger's (Inn) and ran him out of business.
Henry Clay makes a speech from the balcony.
Wild Bill's Wild West Show stayed here. They performed at the Sunbury
Playground at Cherry Street and Morning Streets, according to Polly Horn.

1829
Lawrence Myers dies. His widow, Eliza Myers, continues to run the Inn but
sells the remaining lots owned by Lawrence. She keeps control of the lots on
this side of the square until the 1840's.

1848
Eliza Myers sells the Inn and surrounding lots to William Winans.

Prior to 2004
Next there are a couple of other owners and then the Inn is purchased by
Jeduthun Skeels, who remodels it to its present form in 2004.

1902-1978
The Hopkins family buys Myers Inn and names it Hopkins House or
Sunbury Tavern, a name which remains for 76 years.

1974
The Myers Inn / Sunbury Tavern is put on the National Registry of Historic
Places, along with the Town Hall.

1978 Harold McMillan purchases the Inn and gives it to the Community Library.

Community Library Board of Trustees decides to build away from the site
and turns the property over to the Big Walnut Historical Society.


2004
The building is renovated for use as a museum and meeting rooms.

2018

Stephen Bennet is the first lot buyer. The original building is built as a
mercantile store. The building, built in 1900, has housed the following
businesses: Knights of Pythias Hall, a movie theatre, an auditorium, a store,

In 1872 a group of men formed a stock company called The Farmers Bank and did
business at 30 South Vernon Street. In 1875, when the rent was raised to $75 per year,
the board authorized Mr. Moore to build a frame building at 39 East Granville next to
Moore's home.

1882
A stone building, constructed in 1882 at 28 E. Cherry St. houses the
Farmer's Bank (originally founded in 1872 at 30 S. Vernon) which remains
here until 1960.

1960
The Farmer's Bank builds the current building at 28 E. Cherry.

1965-1966

The Benoy Building is now empty lot. There was an attorney in the
building, whose wife ran a millinery shop. The second office of the Sunbury

Site History for 51 E. Cherry St., Sunbury

1868
Col. Frambes solicits donations from the public to build a private school in
the middle of the town square. He raises $5000 for the building, which is made
of bricks sun-dried on the farm west of town. The Masonic Lodge, which
then consists of all the men in town, has no meeting hall and raises $1300 to
add the third story onto the building. Unfortunately, the school goes bankrupt
after just 3 years of service and the building becomes available for public
meetings.

1871
Known as the Sunbury Institute, the building has a theatre on the second
floor which houses touring entertainment groups of educational and
recreational types. Often churches meet here as do other community groups.
The first floor of the building houses the town offices, the fire department,
the Marshall's office and jail.

1880
Years after constructing the Town Hall on the square, the town fathers decide
the bare square is not a thing of beauty and asks Nathan Marble to plant trees
on the square. Marble researches the types of trees native to the area and
plants them in circles of eight on the four quadrants of the square.

When a banking location is needed during construction of the present bank
on the north side of the square, a vault is moved into the second room of the
Town Hall, as it is now known, and banking continues from that room. Scout
groups, Fish-Fries, dance schools and even a teen recreation center are
housed in the building over the years.

1954
The Community Library moves into the first floor of the Town Hall. Later, it
acquires the second and then the third floors as the collection grows.

1965
The building is sandblasted.

1966
Prior to the village's Sesquicentennial celebration, the pink flowering
crabapple trees are added along the walk and the redbud tree is planted on the
west side. Since this time, other groups have planted trees. All are cared for
through the Marble tree Fund, named after Nathan Marble.

1982
The building is renovated.

1994
The new library is built and the Town Hall is returned to the village.

General Rosecrans

William Starke Rosecrans was an American inventor, coal-oil company

executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army Officer. He gained fame for

his role as a Union general during the American Civil War. He was the

victor at prominent Western Theater battles, but his military career was

effectively ended following his disastrous defeat at the Battle of

Chickamauga in 1863.

SITE HISTORY FOR POSTAL SERVICES

Early Letter
The village of Zoar was plotted April 20, 1816 by William Carpenter. At
that time the post office was on Yankee St. south of the village, in the
residence of Marcus Curtiss. The stage line passed the place of Curtiss and a
daily mail was received from both directions.

About 1834 when the post office was established in the village of Zoar, it
was discovered that there was already another post office in Ohio by that
name. To meet the emergency, at the suggestion of Nathan Dustin, the name
of the village was changed to Galena.

J.W. Likes became postmaster in 1863 and was responsible for getting the
money order office at Galena, it being the only office of that kind in the
county, other than Delaware.

The post office prospered with the village, until the fateful day of April
24, 1947 when the building, equipment and records were destroyed by fire.
The equipment was never replaced.

Postmasters following those named were J. Arnold, W. Linnaberry, B.
Campbell, C. Vanfleet, B. Cambell, R. K. Fissel, W. E. Roerk and R. L.
Bennett. Sincerely, Waldon E. Need, Postmaster, Galena Ohio.

1893
Lizzie Davis builds a large frame building at 44-50 E. Cherry St. and runs
the Post Office here through 1893.

The Sunbury Post Office is located in the Benoy Building at 30 E. Cherry St.

1894-1896
Arthur Reed operates the Post Office.

1897
Ezra Gill runs the Post Office.

Ken Crowl runs the Post Office located at 65 E. Granville St.

1952
The Highway Post Office makes its first trip between Akron and Columbus
Ohio.

2018
The Sunbury Post Office is located at 267 W. Granville St.

Business Beyond
The Square

Through the years Sunbury has grown slowly, but it has still been able to
maintain its classic village features and culture. But as they say, "Things are a
changin'. "

The Columbus metropolitan area is growing and much of that growth is
North into Delaware County. New subdivisions and businesses are springing up.
The village is changing from rural to suburban. The ornate vintage structures of
the past are giving way to modern architecture. This is Sunbury 2018.
